NORSAN algae oil
Plant-based omega-3 - 100% vegan
Microalgae Schizochytrium
Algea oil is extracted from the micro-algae Schizochytrium sp., which has a high content of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Most algea oils (developed so far) contain only DHA. However, our body needs both DHA and EPA, so with Schizochytrium sp. we had the right raw material for the NORSAN Omega-3 Vegan oil and capsules.
Sustainability
Algea oil is the sustainable answer for adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
Marine habitats have a natural limit to the amount of fish that can be caught without damaging fish stocks and the marine environment. On the other hand, there is a great need for omega-3 fatty acids, as 9 out of 10 people are significantly omega-3 deficient.
The solution lies in algae oil because it is grown in artificial seawater and therefore there is no real limit to the amount that can be grown. Since these microalgae are also the food base for fish and krill, consuming algea oil is a step (or two) further and goes straight to the source.
Vegetable algae oil - 100% vegan
NORSAN algae oil is a 100% vegetable oil and therefore suitable for a vegan diet. The algae oil is produced in different facilities than those for fish oil. With a high content of both the marine omega-3s DHA and EPA, NORSAN algae oil offers a true vegan alternative to consuming fish or fish oil.
Extraction
The alga is grown in artificial seawater and then fermented in an aqueous environment. The crude oil is extracted using a centrifuge. The process is particularly gentle on the fatty acids. NORSAN Algae Oil is produced in an oxygen-free processing environment so that our oil is optimally protected against oxidation. The cultivation of the algae also makes the algae oil very low in pollutants. We have used a modern plant that filters the oil in a unique way.
LOW TOTOX VALUE
The algea oil has a very low oxidation value. Oxidation causes an unpleasant odor and negatively affects the taste. The oxidation value (TOTOX value) can be seen as a "freshness value"; the lower the value, the fresher the oil. For algea oil, the TOTOX value ranges between 3 and 5, indicating very high freshness.
Why is high EPA content important?
Omega-3 EPA fatty acids are central in controlling inflammatory processes in the body.
- Omega-3 EPA fatty acids are the starting point of the anti-inflammatory hormone prostaglandins type 3 (PGE3). As an eicosanoid, this hormone is the antagonist of the inflammatory hormone prostaglandin type 2 (PGE2), whose starting material is the omega-6 fatty acid (arachidonic acid). In this way, EPA inhibits the pro-inflammatory effects of PGE2 from arachidonic acid. Side note: Aspirin also addresses the symptoms of PGE2.
- EPA can be converted into DHA. This fatty acid also has anti-inflammatory functions.
- A high proportion of omega-3 EPA in the body slows down the conversion capacity for the omega-6 fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6 share the conversion capacity in the body). Thus, this indirect effect inhibits the formation of the omega-6 arachidonic acid in the body.
The ratio of EPA to DHA in Omega-3 Total is approximately 2: 1, which has proven to be effective in balancing an omega-6/3 imbalance in the body (based on more than 3,000 individual fatty acid analyses in Germany).
