General questions about omega-3 fatty acids

Are there signs if the body is not getting enough omega-3?

In some diseases, omega-3 deficiency can be assumed, and disease progression can be alleviated by the intake of omega-3 fatty acids. In general, the Western diet is associated with omega-3 deficiency. Direct signs are often not really noticed because they are already part of daily life and people have become accustomed to living with them (sleep problems, lack of concentration, digestive problems, etc.). Moreover, many autoimmune diseases can be caused by a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids, even if no noticeable changes have occurred in the body before that.

How can the body be supplemented with omega-3?

The best method remains the classic way: by eating lots of fish, such as mackerel, salmon or herring. But as explained in the question "How much omega-3 does fish contain?", you should eat 100 g of herring, 250 g of salmon or 1.5 kg of trout daily to get enough omega-3 (2 g per day). Another source of omega-3 is flaxseed oil and other plant sources. However, marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) are considered more effective than plant-based omega-3 fatty acids (ALA). The human body can convert only a small percentage (0.5 - 10.0%) of ALA into EPA and DHA.

How much omega-3 does fish contain?

The omega-3 content in fish depends on the species. Herring contains about 2 g of omega-3 per 100 g, making herring a good natural source of omega-3 fatty acids. Tuna, salmon and mackerel are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, although about 250 g of salmon is needed for 2 g of omega-3. In other conventional fish, the omega-3 content is quite low. For example, you would need to consume 1.5 kg of trout to absorb 2 g of omega-3.

Is it possible to get enough omega-3 through the daily diet?

Yes, in theory it is possible. However, you would have to consume large amounts of certain foods. Realistically, this is only feasible for very few people. To ensure the recommended daily intake of about 2 g of omega-3 fatty acids, you would have to eat about 100 g of herring, 150 g of tuna, 250 g of salmon, 300 g of mackerel, 1.5 kg of trout or 3 kg of cod daily.

What should I watch out for when taking omega-3 fatty acids and blood thinners simultaneously?

The action of blood thinners can be enhanced by omega-3. The mutual reinforcement depends on the type and dosage of the drugs used. In this case, you should seek advice from your doctor.

Which omega-3 oil should I take?

When choosing an appropriate oil, the ratios of EPA and DHA are important. EPA primarily plays a role in regulating inflammation, and DHA is essential for cognitive functions and nerve health. Both fatty acids are found in all oils, but there is relatively more EPA in Omega-3 Total, and more DHA in Omega-3 Vegan and Omega-3 Arktis.
Depending on the goal:
- Metabolism, heart, rheumatism, allergies, etc. (chronic inflammation) → Omega-3 Total
- Dementia, ADHD, brain development in pregnancyOmega-3 Vegan of Arktis

But most importantly, each customer should feel comfortable with the product. After all, it's also about taste, price or a plant-based diet. When in doubt, we are happy to give personal advice:

Why is a good omega-3 important?

Many health-promoting properties have been attributed to marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA). According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), they contribute to:

  • Normal heart function (EPA and DHA)

  • Maintenance of normal vision (DHA)

  • Maintenance of normal brain function (DHA)

  • Maintenance of normal triglyceride levels in the blood

  • Normal development of eyes and brain in fetus and infants through mother

  • Normal vision development in babies up to 12 months of age

A large imbalance of omega fatty acids can lead to "silent inflammation," which can eventually cause serious disease. Omega-6 has a pro-inflammatory effect, while omega-3 has an anti-inflammatory effect.

NORSAN Algae Oil

Are there heavy metals in NORSAN fish oil and cod liver oil?

As the oceans become increasingly polluted, so do the fish in them. The higher the fish are in the food chain, the higher the contamination with PCBs and heavy metals. Sardines, for example, have lower levels than cod.

NORSAN oils are carefully purified of PCBs and heavy metals in Norway. They remain well below the EU limit: less than 1/5 of the maximum EU value, and only 2% of the amount found in a serving of cod (100 g).

From which fish is NORSAN fish oil extracted?

The quality of fish oil is determined by the selection of the right raw material: the fish. NORSAN fish oil comes from sustainable fishing (wild catch) and is produced in Norway. The fish oil comes from small deep-sea fish such as sardines, mackerel and anchovies that are processed immediately after being caught on board. These fish come exclusively from the Atlantic Ocean. The cod for NORSAN cod liver oil is also caught wild, in the Arctic Ocean off the Norwegian coast.

Is there a big difference between flaxseed oil and fish oil?

Flaxseed oil contains the highest content of plant omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), but lacks the important EPA and DHA fatty acids found in fish and algal oils. The body can convert only 0.5% to 10% of ALA to EPA and DHA. As a result, flaxseed oil is not enough to make up for EPA or DHA deficiency.

Is there a big difference between flaxseed oil and algae oil?

Flaxseed oil is the vegetable oil with the highest omega-3 content (over 50%) and contributes to a healthy and balanced diet. However, flaxseed oil does not contain the important omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are considered particularly important for health and are found in vegetable algae oil. Although our bodies are able to partially convert the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) present in flaxseed oil into EPA and DHA (0.5% to 10%), flaxseed oil is not sufficient to compensate for EPA or DHA deficiency.

A plant-based omega-3 oil high in marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), NORSAN Algae Oil - 100% is fish-free.

What criteria are important when choosing a good algae oil?

The following quality factors should be checked:

  • Rich in EPA and DHA (many algal oils contain only DHA)

  • High omega-3 content

  • Most natural oil extraction possible, without subsequent concentration of omega-3 fatty acids

  • Favorable analytical values such as TOTOX value, heavy metals and PCBs

  • Sustainability

  • Completely plant-based and 100% vegan

Omega-3 Vegan Algae Oil meets these criteria, reflecting a high standard of quality.

What is the difference between natural fish oil and fish oil concentrate?

Many omega-3 products contain concentrated fish oil obtained by chemical processes, often with only 2-3 types of fatty acids. Natural fish oil contains more than 50 types of fatty acids, similar to eating real fish. In addition, natural oil is more stable and less susceptible to oxidation.
